Biographical Information[edit]
In his three years at San Diego State University, Cole Carrigg played every defensive position (including three pitching appearances) except right field. He hit .388/.426/.509 in his sophomore season and followed that up with a line of .303/.357/.458 in his final collegiate season for an aggregate total of .333/.399/.477. He also slashed .299/.363/.372 in two seasons of summer collegiate baseball (where he did play right field). In the 2023 Amateur Draft, the Colorado Rockies organization chose the versatile switch-hitter in the competitive balance-B round, 65th overall. He signed on July 17 for a $1.3 million signing bonus.
He was originally assigned to the ACL Rockies that summer, but tore up the Arizona Complex League to the tune of .396/.464/.688 with 8 extra-base hits in 13 games. He was moved up to the class A California League, where he continued to rake. He mashed .326/.376/.554 with 4 doubles, 4 triples, and 3 long balls in 23 games for the Fresno Grizzlies. Between the two levels, he split time between center field, shortstop, and catcher.
To begin the 2024 season, he was moved up to the Spokane Indians of the advanced-A Northwest League and was the Indians' opening-day center fielder and leadoff hitter. During the season, he'd also see some time at shortstop and remained in the leadoff spot all season (save for a four-game stint back with the ACL Rockies). He finished the season with a slash line of .280/.358/.475. His 16 home runs and 11 triples were both league leading totals; teammate and MVP Kyle Karros was tied for 2nd in home runs with 15. Carrigg was 2nd in the NWL with 51 stolen bases, 11 behind Caleb Ketchup of the Everett AquaSox, and his 80 runs scored also were best for 2nd, 2 runs behind teammate Dyan Jorge. He also collected three Player of the Week honors - June 2, July 7, and September 8 (the final week of the regular season). On June 25, during a stint back in the Arizona Complex League, he hit three triples in one game against the ACL Cubs; he went 4-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI. After the season, he was also one of six Indians to be named a Northwest League All-Star, along with Karros, Zach Agnos, Chase Dollander, Carson Skipper, and NWL Pitcher of the Year Sean Sullivan. Baseball America also named Carrigg the top defensive outfielder and most exciting player in the circuit.
His father, Mike Carrigg, played for the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League and the Salinas Peppers of the independent Western League in 1994 and 1995.
