Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Clayton Beeter was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in Competitive Balance Round B of the 2020 amateur draft out of Texas Tech University. He was the 66th overall selection, with the Dodgers using a pick acquired from the Minnesota Twins in the Kenta Maeda trade, but received a signing bonus of $1.2 million, significantly over slot value. His college career had been abruptly interrupted after just 4 starts that season by the COVID-19 pandemic after he had been solely a relief pitcher the year before, his first season back on the mound after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017. He had logged a team-leading 8 saves in 2019, helping Texas Tech to reach to the 2019 College World Series.

He began his pro career in 2021 with the Great Lakes Loons of the High-A Central and also pitched for the Tulsa Drillers of the Double-A Central that year, combining to go 0-6, 3.44 in 28 games (27 starts). The lack of wins was a function of how he was used, as the Dodgers deliberately limited his innings after he had logged just 41 2/3 over his two years of college. Thus, while he took his turn as a starter every fifth day, he only totaled 52 1/3 innings, and never pitched deep enough in a game to be eligible for the win. He did strike out 78 batters over those innings. He was still named an organizational All-Star. This usage pattern continued in 2022 as he went 0-3, 5.75 in 18 games (16 starts) for Tulsa, with 88 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings. On August 2nd, he was traded to the New York Yankees in return for OF Joey Gallo and he pitched well in 7 starts for the Somerset Patriots of the Eastern League to finish the season, with no decisions but an ERA of 2.13 and just 16 hits allowed in 25 1/3 innings, with 41 strikeouts and 11 walks.

The Yankees finally let him rip in 2023, and he responded with an excellent season. He started off by going 6-2, 2.08 in 12 starts for Somerset, earning an opportunity to represent the American League at the 2023 Futures Game. He was then promoted to the AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, where he went 3-5, 4.94 in another 15 games. Overall, he was 9-7, 3.62, with 105 hit allowed in 131 2/3 innings over 27 games, all but one of them starts, with a K/W ratio of 165/75. After the season, he was named a postseason All-Star in the Eastern League.

He made the Yankees' roster out of spring training in 2024 and his debut on the mound came in the team's second game, against the Houston Astros on March 29th when he pitched a scoreless 9th inning in a 7-1 win.
