Biographical Information[edit]

Chun-Lin Chi played in the Chinese Professional Baseball League for 7 years.

Chi played in the 1992 Little League World Series qualifiers, losing to the Philippines in the Far East finale, 1997 World Junior Championship and 1998 Asian Junior Championship. He played in the 2001 Asian Championship. The first overall pick in the 2001 CPBL Draft, he hit a disappointing .215/.342/.280 as a rookie for the Chinatrust Whales. In 2002, he was little better at .227/.294/.318. Chi was 0-for-5 in the 2002 Taiwan Series, and the Whales were swept by the Brother Elephants. He began turning it on in 2003, putting up a .284/.382/.360 line and stealing 48 bases in 70 tries. He led the league in times caught stealing while finishing one swipe behind leader Kan-Lin Huang. Chi also won the CPBL Most Improved Player Award. In the 2003 Baseball World Cup, he backed up Cheng-Wei Huang in center field for Taiwan and put on a pathetic show, fanning in five of his six at-bats and never getting a hit or walk while making two errors in the field.

The Taichung native batted .277/.361/.325 in 2004 and stole 30 bases while being thrown out running 15 times. He was again one steal behind the leader, Chao-Hang Cheng, while again leading in times thrown out. He made his only Best Ten, joining Chih-Yuan Chen and Cheng-Min Peng as the outfielders honored. In 2005, Chi hit .286/.361/.357 and stole 21 bases in 31 tries. He fielded .984 with 11 assists in 93 games. He won a CPBL Gold Glove that year. The next season, Chi's batting line was .276/.334/.368 and he was 16-for-24 in steal attempts. He batted .269/.348/.358 and pilfered 19 bags in 24 tries in 2007. That marked his final season as Chi was banned from the game for a game-fixing scandal.

Overall, Chi hit .271/.351/.346 in 567 games in 7 seasons in the CPBL, with 316 runs and 145 steals in 210 tries.
