Biographical Information[edit]

Chia-Yi Mai played in the CPBL for 9 years. His brother is former CPBL pitcher Chia-Rui Mai.

Mai represented Taiwan in the 2001 World Youth Championship. The Uni-President Lions selected him in the third round of the 2008 CPBL Draft, and he had a 7.33 ERA in 25 appearances in the minor league in 2009. He suffered from a right shoulder injury, and he missed the entire 2010 season. Mai then recorded a 2.08 ERA in 10 games in the minor league in 2011, but he had a 11.25 ERA in 8 games with the big club. He stayed in the minor league for the next two seasons, and he decided to become a batter after the 2012 season.

The Tainan native hit .270/.364/.371 in the minor league in 2013, and he broke out in 2014. His batting line was .327/.450/.503, and he led the minor league in homers, RBI, walks and OBP. Thus, he won a spot with the big club in 2015, and he hit .278/.371/.387 in 78 games. Mai slumped to .198/.322/.396 in 2016, then he hit .240/.336/.341 in 2017. He was 8-for-22 in 2018, and he had a 2-for-3 record while driving in 3 runs in the 2018 Taiwan Series. The Lamigo Monkeys still beat the Lions in 6 games. Mai hit .143/.200/.214 in 13 games in 2019, then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Mai had hit .249/.343/.371 with 127 hits and 11 homers in 5 seasons in the CPBL.
