Biographical Information[edit]

Chia-Rui Mai pitched in CPBL for 2 years. His brother is CPBL infielder Chia-Yi Mai.

Mai was drafted by the Brother Elephants in the first round of the 2007 CPBL Draft. He debuted in 2008, going 4-6 with 8 saves and a 4.43 ERA in 46 games. In the 2008 Taiwan Series, the rookie allowed one earned run in 10 1/3 innings and was 1-1, winning game 3 but losing game 7 to Luther Hackman. He was the youngest pitcher to get a win in a Taiwan Series. After the 2008 season, he tried out in the US but no MLB club signed him. Mai was better in 2009, going 4-3 with 15 holds and a 2.47 ERA in 51 outings. In the 2009 Taiwan Series, he gave up 5 runs in 8 1/3 IP over five games. He was 7th in appearances (15 behind Chien-San Kao) and 3rd in holds (8 behind Matt Perisho). However, Mai was involved in a game-fixing scandal, and he was banned for life after this season. He passed away due to a car accident in 2020.

Mai's repertoire includes a slider, changeup, 2-seam fastball and cutter. His fastball has peaked at 94 mph.

Overall, Mai was 8-9 with a 3.68 ERA, struck out 81 and pitched 142 innings in 2 seasons in the CPBL.
