Biographical Information[edit]
While playing for the Salem Avalanche, Luther Hackman threw a no-hitter on August 4, 1996.
Hackman was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball while a free agent in the winter of 2007 for a positive test for banned substances. He then signed with the Uni-President Lions of Taiwan for 2008, going 5-1 with a 2.95 ERA in the regular season.
Hackman tossed 17 shutout innings in the 2008 Taiwan Series, winning games 4 and 7 for the Uni-President Lions. He was named Taiwan Series MVP, the second straight foreign hurler to win MVP honors with the Lions, following Nelson Figueroa in 2007.
Luther won games one, four and seven of the 2009 Taiwan Series; in the second contest, he threw 153 pitches in a complete game (third-most in Taiwan Series history). This broke the Series record of four straight wins held by Chin-Hsing Kuo. Hackman again was named Series MVP despite an unimpressive 3.60 ERA, the first player to take that award two years in a row. It would be 9 years before Chun-Hsiu Chen became the second.
