Biographical Information[edit]
Cheng-Chung Chen played in the CPBL and for the Chinese Taipei national baseball team.
Chen represented Taiwan in the 1982 Amateur World Series, 1988 Haarlemse Honkbalweek and 1989 World Port Tournament. The Mercuries Tigers signed him when the team was found in 1990. Chen blasted the first grand slam in the league, off Kuang-Chi Huang on April 4 1990. He hit .239/.318/.364 with 7 homers in that season, and was selected into the first All-Star Game of the league. He had the first game-winning RBI in a Taiwan Series; the Tigers lost the 1990 Taiwan Series to the Wei Chuan Dragons but Chen had the game-winning RBI in both their victories. The slugger batted .261/.330/.419 and crushed 10 dingers in 1991, which ranked 7th in the league. Chen hit .281/.347/.448 with a career-high 12 homers and participated in the All-Star Game again in 1992. He was 8th in homers, 10th in hits, 10th in batting average and 6th in total bases. Chen's hitting slid down to .242/.295/.343 in 1993, and .224/.255/.301 in 1994. When Tsung-Hui Tong joined the team in 1994, Chen was influenced and only played 36 games with a .228/.260/.337 batting line in 1995. He announced his retirement after that season, and became the hitting coach for the Taichung Agan from 1997 to 2000.
Overall, Chen had hit .250/.310/.378 with 37 home runs in six seasons in the CPBL.
