Biographical Information[edit]

Charles David Phillips, also known as "Charlie", was on the first Orange County, CA team to go to the Little League World Series (1968) and pitched 2 shutouts and struck out 29 batters in 12 innings. He then followed that with an appearance in the Senior World Series two years later.

Charlie went to La Quinta High School where he was player of the year in the Garden Grove league and All-Orange County first team two years and All CIF first team two years in a row. In 1973 Charlie was a member of the Connie Mack World Series champion Long Beach Cardinals and won two games in the World Series including the final game.

Charlie was drafted in the 13th round of the 1973 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves out of high school but received a full scholarship from the University of Southern California where he helped them win the 1974 College World Series. Drafted in the 9th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1976 amateur draft, Charlie played two years in the organization and spent another three years in the California Angels organization, reaching as high as AAA. He was a member of two championship teams in the minor leagues and led the Texas League in winning percentage in 1979 when he went 10-2 for the El Paso Diablos.

Charlie moved on to be a head coach at the high school, junior college and four-year college level at various schools in Orange County. Charlie had over 55 players under his tutelage sign pro contracts. While at Southern California College (later Vanguard University) he coached the first female pitcher to win a college game (Ila Borders). In his six years as the coach at Vanguard he led them to the playoffs four times.
