Biographical Information

Charlie Mason played in the National Association in 1875 and the American Association in 1883. He also managed in the A.A. in 1887. While he never played in the National League, he umpired one game in the circuit in 1876.

Mason was born in 1853 in New Orleans, LA. John Peters is the only Louisiana-born major league player with an earlier birthdate.

The book Baseball in Philadelphia: a history of the early game, 1831-1900 has a page on him. It says he played amateur ball in New Orleans and then pitched for Williams College. By 1874 he was playing amateur ball in Philadelphia, PA. He played for a variety of professional teams after his stint in the 1875 National Association. In 1876 he was with a pro team based in Philly. Then he was with Harrisburg, Lynn, Philly again, Davenport, and Philly again.

In 1887 he served as the second manager for the Philadelphia Athletics, going 38-40. His players included future Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson, who was 24 at the time. He was also a co-owner of the team, alongside Bill Sharsig and Lew Simmons, who also served as manager during the period.
