Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Charley Barrett played in the minor leagues from at least 1901 to 1905, mostly at the C and D levels. He managed the Houston Buffaloes for part of 1909.
Barrett found his niche as a scout. He met Branch Rickey while in the Texas League. While working in a sporting goods store in St. Louis, MO, he helped Art Fletcher get his start with Dallas. This and other players he helped got him a job as a scout with the St. Louis Browns. After Rickey joined the Browns, he basically took Barrett with him through baseball.
Barrett scouted Bill Killefer, Pepper Martin, Jim Bottomley, Ray Blades, Charlie Grimm, Muddy Ruel, Flint Rhem, Heinie Mueller, and Don Gutteridge among others.
