Category talk:Negro League Players

From BR Bullpen

I used Holway's "The Complete Book of Baseball's Negro Leagues" and nlbpa.com - between the two sources I should have gotten at least 95% of the players who have pages here and who appeared in the Negro Leagues. Of course, there are plenty of non-MLB Negro Leaguers still to cover.

Some of these sounds correct. One problem is that information is very scant on post-1950 Negro Leagues. I'll see what I can find out this week looking at my NegLg sources. - --Mischa 11:30, 23 August 2006 (EDT)

I don't see any note of either Walker playing for a top-flight all-black team. Cabrera and Harridge are not listed in Riley's biographical encyclopedia. Luque was on the 1912 Cuban Stars, so he's good. Acosta was on a 1915 Cubans squad. No sign of Ricardo Torres, unless he was the Torres on the '16 Long Branch Cubans. Calvo's good. An Oscar Estrada was on the 1924-25 Cuban Stars, but Riley says he didn't appear in the US again until 1931 so either we have new information or it's the wrong Oscar Estrada. Hector Rodriguez was on the NY Cubans for two years. Bob Wilson's a yes; same with Charlie White and Webbo Clarke. More later. - --Mischa 18:05, 24 August 2006 (EDT)

Peete, yes. Milt Smith, yes. Amoros, yes. Mason, yes. Bridges, yes. Altman, yes. Johnson, yes. - --Mischa 16:31, 25 August 2006 (EDT)

Yes to Coleman, Willie Smith and Casanova. ? on Proctor, George Smith and Bond - the only source I found readily was another internet one at baseball-fever.com. - --Mischa 04:18, 27 August 2006 (EDT)

We might have another centenarian from the Negro Leagues. Today's Post-Gazette claimed that a Wallace "Bucky" Williams turned 100. The teams he's listed on show a Harry Williams (no birthdate) in both Riley and Holway. So either it's the same guy or a confusion over Williamses (with so many Williams from the Negro Leagues, no surprise). Before I add a page, I'll check with some Negro League researchers - --Mischa 12:41, 17 December 2006 (EST)

I also found in an article about Rollie Stiles, the mention of two Negro League centenarians... Emilio Navarro (who is also mentioned on wikipedia) and William "Red" Lindsay. Can anyone confirm? -Chisoxfan 13:00, 17 December 2006 (EST)

Red Lindsay was born 4/15/05 and he hadn't died by 1994 as per Riley. I'm assuming he's good if he made it another decade. Navarro was born 9/26/05 so he'd also have reached it by now. I'm guessing they're good but would want another source for Lindsay before we add the article. - --Mischa 13:05, 17 December 2006 (EST)

NLBPA says Red died in May, so he was 101. - --Mischa 13:06, 17 December 2006 (EST)

I got confirmation on Williams and added him. Will try to get Navarro soon. - --Mischa 21:08, 21 December 2006 (EST)

Got Navarro. - --Mischa 21:22, 21 December 2006 (EST)

We're up to 300 entries here. It's one area I had meant to cover more off and have gotten bogged down instead in international baseball. The other area I'm finally picking up again is Japan, where I did a lot in 2005-2006 but little in 2007-2008. - --Mischa 20:35, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

350. - --Mischa 20:17, 2 December 2009 (EST)

400. - --Mischa 20:38, 13 December 2010 (EST)

450. So we had 50 added in just over a year, then the next 50 in about a month and a half. - --Mischa 20:37, 29 January 2011 (EST)

16 Johnsons, 12 Williams, 11 Smiths. - --Mischa 20:56, 31 January 2011 (EST)

500, Wilmer Fields being #500. 50 new ones in under a month. I hope to be getting my computer back in operation soon, which will slow down my pace here as I work on other categories more. - --Mischa 13:07, 27 February 2011 (EST)

550. 150 in the past three months and two days. Felix McLaurin was #550. - --Mischa 20:11, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

Willie Sheelor[edit]

Willie Sheelor who currently lives in Kannapolis, NC played for the Memphis Red Sox in the early '50s. Would you like me to get you more info on him. His wife is friends with mine and I spoke with him a few times.

Ollie Byrd is #2,600 - Mischa (talk) 20:58, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Just one year left to input. Not sure if there will be enough new additions to clear 2,700. Philippe (talk) 21:56, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
There will still be post-1948 and pre-1920 players (non-MLB players) to add over time even after your MLB project is done. - Mischa (talk) 10:47, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

Bolden is the last of the major league Negro Leaguers to be added, which brings the total to 2,660. Lots of non major leaguers still missing, however. Philippe (talk) 19:54, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
