Mischa: That's a lot of teams. ISTR that you discouraged categories with more than 1 page of entries, which Minor League Teams has obviously now exceeded. I think it was Phillippe who suggested keeping categories small. I don't think this is feasible in a lot of cases (the Minor League Stars page could easily top 200; Negro League Players, Coaches, Umpires, Broadcasters, Nippon Pro Baseball Players, etc.). We could break up the teams by classification, but that doesn't work for pre-1902 teams or teams that have been in several classifications. It might be possible to break up the teams geographically - NE, SE, etc. --Just me

The active/defunct distinction is a reasonable one, but it won't completely solve the size problem. There are enough defunct teams that the category will still be huge. Other forms of subcategorizing teams also have problems. Geographic categories have problems for teams that have moved while retaining their team history. League categorizations have problems for teams that have changed leagues. Going by league category (i.e. A, AA, AAA, etc) won't work for teams that have changed categories.

The best solution may be to do away with Category:Minor League Teams altogether. Instead, minor league teams would be categorized according to the league(s) they've been members of, and those leagues would be in Category:Leagues or possibly in some subcategory such as Category:Minor Leagues, Category:North American Minor Leagues (doesn't yet exist), or the like. There wouldn't be a single place where you could look up every minor league team ever, but given that the current Category:Minor League Teams is already pretty useless because of its size that wouldn't necessarily be a loss. --Roger 13:14, 24 May 2006 (EDT)

• I dont see the same problem you are seeing. It is perfectly acceptable for a wikipage to belong to several categories, therefore it is perfectly acceptable for teams that belonged in one league to be categorized in both that league and any other league it belonged/belongs to. --Gvsualan 18:11, 24 May 2006 (EDT)

At some point, we're probably going to have to go through and do a thorough reorganization of the minor league teams. Some of it will be a re-categorization of the teams- grouping them according to league instead of lumping them all into- but I think that it would be a good idea to come up with some kind of standard about what constitutes a "team". In some cases we have individual pages for each nickname that a team has carried while in others we have a single page that covers a "team" across gaps of 40 years when it was defunct. I have a question. I'm trying to do some work on team nicknames for the various cities listed. Two examples of the same problem: Greenville and Springfield. Is Greenville "XYZ" in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, etc?? Is Springfield "ABC" in Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Tennessee, etc? I have to go through each team name to find what state/team they are. When we have multiple cities with the same name, why can't we add a GA or IL or OH to the city name soas not having to spend needless time trying to find the city/year you are looking for? Just a suggestion!!
