Over 400 teams to date! - --Mischa 18:22, 23 Jan 2006 (EST)

Over 500 teams. Within less than 2 weeks we've added about 100. - --Mischa 20:16, 4 Feb 2006 (EST)

Mischa: That's a lot of teams. ISTR that you discouraged categories with more than 1 page of entries, which Minor League Teams has obviously now exceeded. Should we think about some broader organizing scheme, or will Minor League Teams wind up being one of the few categories that unavoidably have more? --Roger 20:23, 4 Feb 2006 (EST)

I think it was Phillippe who suggested keeping categories small. I don't think this is feasible in a lot of cases (the Minor League Stars page could easily top 200; Negro League Players, Coaches, Umpires, Broadcasters, Nippon Pro Baseball Players, etc.). We could break up the teams by classification, but that doesn't work for pre-1902 teams or teams that have been in several classifications. It also would be a lot of work to reorganize the teams. - --Mischa 20:25, 4 Feb 2006 (EST)

It might be possible to break up the teams geographically - NE, SE, etc. --Just me

We're at 750 now. 250 teams added in a month and a half or so. - --Mischa 17:18, 17 Mar 2006 (EST)

  • They could be sub-categorized as either active or defunct. Furthermore they could be sub-categorized by league, or state, or all of the above, each of which would belong to this main category.--Gvsualan 11:00, 24 May 2006 (EDT)

The active/defunct distinction is a reasonable one, but it won't completely solve the size problem. There are enough defunct teams that the category will still be huge. Other forms of subcategorizing teams also have problems. Geographic categories have problems for teams that have moved while retaining their team history. League categorizations have problems for teams that have changed leagues. Going by league category (i.e. A, AA, AAA, etc) won't work for teams that have changed categories.

The best solution may be to do away with Category:Minor League Teams altogether. Instead, minor league teams would be categorized according to the league(s) they've been members of, and those leagues would be in Category:Leagues or possibly in some subcategory such as Category:Minor Leagues, Category:North American Minor Leagues (doesn't yet exist), or the like. There wouldn't be a single place where you could look up every minor league team ever, but given that the current Category:Minor League Teams is already pretty useless because of its size that wouldn't necessarily be a loss. --Roger 13:14, 24 May 2006 (EDT)

  • I dont see the same problem you are seeing. It is perfectly acceptable for a wikipage to belong to several categories, therefore it is perfectly acceptable for teams that belonged in one league to be categorized in both that league and any other league it belonged/belongs to. --Gvsualan 18:11, 24 May 2006 (EDT)

We're over 2,000 teams now. Lots of stubs, but lots of teams now have records/managers at least and I'd guess 1,000 might have full summaries. - --Mischa 13:14, 3 September 2006 (EDT)

At some point, we're probably going to have to go through and do a thorough reorganization of the minor league teams. Some of it will be a re-categorization of the teams- grouping them according to league instead of lumping them all into- but I think that it would be a good idea to come up with some kind of standard about what constitutes a "team". In some cases we have individual pages for each nickname that a team has carried while in others we have a single page that covers a "team" across gaps of 40 years when it was defunct. We need to strike some kind of balance between those two extremes. --Roger 00:10, 4 September 2006 (EDT)

We're now over 3,000 teams. A year and a half to add the most recent 1,000. I don't know if there have been 4,000 teams in the history of the minors - let's see if we get there or not. - --Mischa 08:56, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if we make 4,000. Seems like there's 2,000 in NC alone. --Jeff 01:05, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

I think we have a page for every team since 1940, with the exception of some of the newer indy league teams. --Jeff 19:11, 27 April 2008 (EDT)

Well, over 5 1/2 years after I wondered if we'd get to 4,000 and Jeff was pretty sure we would, we made it with the San Francisco Haverlys. - --Mischa (talk) 08:21, 16 December 2013 (EST)

With the recent surge, this category has become our 6th-biggest, passing Baseball Families and public domain images; the other two are likely to catch up eventually as this one is closer to reaching 100% of historical entries. - --Mischa (talk) 11:17, 2 January 2014 (EST)

I have a question. I'm trying to do some work on team nicknames for the various cities listed. Two examples of the same problem: Greenville and Springfield. Is Greenville "XYZ" in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, etc?? Is Springfield "ABC" in Ohio, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Tennessee, etc? I have to go through each team name to find what state/team they are. When we have multiple cities with the same name, why can't we add a GA or IL or OH to the city name soas not having to spend needless time trying to find the city/year you are looking for? Just a suggestion!!

When different cities have the same nickname, we do specify the state - see Jackson Generals as an example. --Jeff (talk) 22:46, 26 February 2015 (EST)

Does the list of cities missing team lists make sense on a category page? - --Mischa (talk) 11:28, 27 April 2015 (EDT)

no --Jeff (talk) 11:33, 27 April 2015 (EDT)

Where then do you put stuff that is missing or not listed??? Jerry Jackson 12:00, 30 April 2015 (EDT)

That is what this page is for. --Philippe (talk) 04:33, 30 April 2015 (EDT)

Also, if what is simply missing is a list of teams in a given city, you can go to that city's page and add in a teams that have played here section - --Mischa (talk) 09:49, 30 April 2015 (EDT)

Our 5,000th entry is GCL Tigers East - --Mischa (talk) 12:44, 29 June 2016 (EDT)
