Biographical Information[edit]
Catayo González pitched for the Cuban national team then was a 20-game-winner in the minors.
He was 2 for 6 for Cuba when they won the 1939 Amateur World Series. [1] He pitched for them when they won Bronze in the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, going 1-2, the first Cuban to lose multiple games in a Central American and Caribbean Games; no one else copied the feat in the 20th Century. [2]
He turned pro in the winter of 1946-47, going 1-2 for Marianao. [3] He made his minor league debut in 1947, going 20-7 with a 2.26 ERA for the Tampa Smokers and also hitting .260. He tied Mel Nee and Zeke Graham for 3rd in the Florida International League in wins and made the top 10 in ERA. He struggled that winter for Marianao and Habana with a 7.20 ERA in two games. [4]
Moving to the Montgomery Rebels for 1948, he posted a 5-10, 3.92 record. He was 5-6 with a 5.14 ERA for the '49 Palatka Azaleas and 4-6 with a 8.86 ERA for the 1950 Big Spring Broncs in the high-offense Longhorn League. In 1951, he went 2-8 with a 5.86 ERA for the Fort Lauderdale Braves. He split 1952 between Fort Lauderdale and the Key West Conchs (0-3, 4.98). He was 2 for 14 for the 1956 Orlando Seratomas. Overall, his minor league record was 36-40, 4.33.
