Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Casey Legumina made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds pitching in relief against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 15, 2023. He pitched two scoreless innings to complete a 13-0 win, sharing credit for a combined shutout with Graham Ashcraft and Buck Farmer.

Casey was drafted three times, first by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 25th round of the 2016 amateur draft coming out of high school, then by the Cleveland Indians in the 35th round of the 2018 amateur draft, and finally by the Minnesota Twins in the 8th round of the 2019 amateur draft. The latter two times, he was at Gonzaga University, where he had saved 13 games as a junior in 2018, then, after moving to the starting rotation in 2019, posted a 1.50 ERA although being limited to just 4 starts. He was injured at the time of the draft and did not pitch professionally that season, then missed all of 2020 when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He finally made his pro debut in 2021, going 4-2, 3.28 in 15 games as a swingman between the Cedar Rapids Kernels and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. In 2022, he made 3 starts for Cedar rapids before being promoted to the Wichita Wind Surge of the AA Texas League, where he made another 30 appearances, including 13 starts. His combined pitching line was 2-6, 4.80 with 3 saves and 92 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings.

On November 18, 2022, he was traded by the Twins to the Reds in return for major league infielder Kyle Farmer. He started the 2023 season with the AAA Louisville Bats and had posted an ERA of 1.59 in 4 relief appearances before his call-up to Cincinnati.
