Biographical Information

Casey Jones was a Negro League catcher for 16 years.

Born in Mississippi, Jones moved to Memphis, TN as a youth. He would spend his entire career with the Memphis Red Sox. He joined Memphis in 1940 and spent eight years backing up Larry Brown before becoming a starter in 1948 and hitting .265. He batted .267 and slugged .635 in 1950, perhaps his best season. He was the starting backstop for the West in the 1950 East-West Game and went 0 for 2 before Tom Cooper pinch-hit for him; the West won, 5-3. In the 1951 East-West Game, Jones pinch-hit for Gilbert Varona in the 7th inning, stayed in the game at catcher and went 0 for 2 against Wilmer Harris in a 3-1 loss by the West. Jones ended his career with Memphis in 1955.
