Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Carson Spiers is the nephew of Bill Spiers, who also attended Clemson University and played 11 seasons in the majors. His father, Michael Spiers, also played at Clemson but did not turn pro, as did his grandfather, Bud Spiers. He was the closer for the school's team starting 2018, picking up 19 saves over three seasons. He was 3-0, 0.59 with 4 saves in 9 games when the 2020 college season was prematurely ended by the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of this success, he went undrafted because the 2020 amateur draft was shrunk to just five rounds by the pandemic. Instead, he was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an undrafted free agent on June 23, 2020.

He had to wait until the minor leagues resumed playing in 2021 to make his professional debut. On May 22nd that year, he was the last of five pitchers for the Daytona Tortugas of the Low-A Southeast to combine on a nine-inning 1-0 no-hitter of the Jupiter Hammerheads. He went 8-4, 3.59 in 25 games between Dayton and the Dayton Dragons that first season, with 20 of his appearances being starts. In 111 2/3 innings, he gave up 87 hits and struck out 130 batters. In 2022, he pitched in AA with the Chattanooga Lookouts and in AAA with the Louisville Bats, making 23 starts in 27 outings and finishing at 4-6, 5.33. He returned to Chattanooga in 2023 and had a strong season as a swingman, with 9 starts in 28 appearances. He went 8-3, 3.69 with 106 Ks in 86 innings.

He made his big league debut for the Reds as the starting pitcher against the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ballpark on September 3, 2023. He gave up 3 runs in 4 innings and was not involved in the decision.
