Biographical Information[edit]

The Atlanta Braves signed P Carlos Portuondo in February 2016 after he had defected from Cuba. He was already 28 at the time and a veteran of 8 seasons in the Serie Nacional, all with Santiago de Cuba. He had started his career in 2005 as a 17-year-old and had pitched for the same team every year until 2013, missing the 2008 season. His time in Cuba was characterized by high ERAs, his lowest being 3.93 in 2006. In his best season, he went 8-3, 4.58 in 2011.

After signing with Atlanta, Portuondo was assigned to the Carolina Mudcats of the Carolina League, then was promoted to the Gwinnett Braves of the AAA International League in early August. Combined, he was 2-1, 3.63 in 17 games, with 25 Ks and 17 walks in 34 2/3 innings. On February 13, 2017, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds alongside fellow P Andrew McKirahan in return for veteran major league 2B Brandon Phillips.
