Biographical Information[edit]

Carlos Jan peaked at AA as a player.

Jan debuted with the DSL Angels, going 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA and 110 K in 72 2/3 IP, allowing just 27 hits. He was 8th in the Dominican Summer League in ERA and possibly as high as third in strikeouts. He was summoned stateside for 2002 and pitched for the AZL Angels (5-1, Sv, 3.86 in 21 G, 44 K, 24 BB, 19 H in 35 IP) and Provo Angels (8 R in 2/3 IP). He tied for 6th in the Arizona League in wins and was third in games pitched, behind Daniel Arias and Charlie Haeger. He was sent back to the DSL for 2003 and was 3-1 with a 1.06 ERA, 21 hits and 59 K in 42 1/3 IP. He did not play in 2004, presumably due to injury.

Carlos moved to the Baltimore Orioles system for 2005. He pitched for the Delmarva Shorebirds (1-2, Sv, 4.37 in 28 G) and Frederick Keys (5-2, 3.78 in 16 G), again being hard to hit (89 H in 114 IP) and striking out a lot (116) but walking too many (75). He was 4th among O's farmhands in walks (between Cory Morris and Jim Johnson) and missed the top 10 in Ks by four behind Hayden Penn.

The Iowa Cubs took him in the AAA portion of the 2006 Rule V Draft. He had a save and a 2.61 ERA in 8 games for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx but returned to the O's chain to appear for Frederick (2-1, Sv, 3.14 in 8 G) and Bowie Baysox (1-2, 4.43 in 23 G). He had a fine Dominican Winter League debut with the Estrellas de Oriente (0 R, 1 H, 5 K in 4 IP). In 2007, he was with Frederick briefly (4.82 in 5 G) and spent time with the independent Edinburg Coyotes (2-3, 3.38 in 8 G, 17 H, 22 BB, 35 K in 32 IP). He was 1-0 in six games for the 2007-2008 Estrellas but with a 15.00 ERA and 2.33 WHIP.

With Edinburg in 2008, he struggled (2-4, 7.42) and proved hit-prone, unusual for him in the past (74 H in 53 1/3 IP). He was rocked in winter ball, with 4 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs in just 1/3 of an inning. He wrapped up his pitching career with the 2009-2010 Toros del Este, hitting the lone batter he faced.

He coached for the DSL Indians from 2012-2017, serving as assistant pitching coach in 2016-2018.
