Biographical Information[edit]
Carlos Fermín peaked at AA. His brother Félix Fermín was a major leaguer and his nephew Andy Fermín played in the minors.
Carlos spent his entire US playing career with the Detroit Tigers chain. He debuted with the 1990 Bristol Tigers, hitting .222/.300/.281 and fielded .941 at shortstop. He led Appalachian League shortstops in putouts (121), assists (164), double plays (34) and fielding percentage and led the league as a whole with 9 sacrifice hits. He split 1991 between the Fayetteville Generals (.214/.298/.228 in 73 G, starting at shortstop at age 17) and Lakeland Tigers (3 for 15). He played for the '92 Niagara Falls Rapids (.169/.280/.197 in 29 G) and the London Tigers (6 for 40, BB).
Fermín batted .252/.316/.299 for Lakeland in 1993, fielding .890 as their main shortstop. In '94, he was a utility man for Lakeland, playing 1B, SS, 3B, the outfield and even pitching one inning. He hit a meek .167/.202/.167. He ended his playing career with the 1995 Jacksonville Suns, producing at a .173/.205/.228 clip, backing up Yuri Sanchez at SS and Gary Cooper at 3B.
Overall, the Mao native hit .210/.276/.244 in 374 minor league games, with 103 runs, 81 RBI and only one homer. He stole 20 bases in 39 tries. He fielded .944 in 255 games at shortstop, .900 in 88 games at 3B and .950 in 36 contests at 2B.
