Biographical Information[edit]

Carlos Contreras made 39 big league appearances. He is one of the most unlikely players to have an immaculate inning under his belt.

Contreras was initially signed by the Cincinnati Reds and scout Richard Jimenez. In his pro debut, he struggled for the 2008 DSL Reds with 30 walks, 8 wild pitches and 21 runs (16 earned) in 16 2/3 innings, going 0-1. The next year, 2009, he improved to 4-4, 5.60 for the same club with 30 walks in 72 1/3 innings. He tied for fourth in the Dominican Summer League with 12 hit batsmen. In 2010, he was 2-4 with 2 saves and a 6.45 ERA for the AZL Reds in his US debut. The next year, 2011, he went 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA for the Billings Mustangs with 23 walks and 38 whiffs in 36 innings. The Dominican split 2012 between the Dayton Dragons (0-1, 16 saves, 3.20, .158 opponent average) and the Bakersfield Blaze (1-0, 4 saves, 2.70). He led Reds farmhands in saves and was 5th in the Midwest League in that department. He tossed two shutout innings for the Toros del Este in the Dominican Winter League. Moving to the rotation, Contreras opened 2013 back with the Blaze and fanned 88 in 84 innings but walked 39 and was 4-7 with a 3.86 ERA after 17 starts. He was picked for the World team for the 2013 Futures Game.

Carlos made his big league debut on June 21, 2014, retiring the side in order in the 9th inning of a blowout victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. In just his fourth career appearance, on July 11th, he fanned Jordy Mercer, Jeff Locke and Gregory Polanco on nine pitches in the 7th inning of a Reds win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Great American Ballpark. He lowered his ERA to 1.74 by the end of July, then was bombarded in finishing the season 0-1, 6.52 in 17 games. He made 22 appearances in 2015 to a 4.82 ERA and was released during spring training 2016, last spotted with the independent Texas AirHogs in 2019.
