Biographical Information[edit]
Carl "Sundown" Yowell pitched two seasons for the Cleveland Indians, appearing in 16 games and winning 3. In 1924-25 in the minors, he had a great record of 24-5.
Yowell was born in Madison, VA in 1902. Other major leaguers born the same year in Virginia include Ollie Tucker, Bill Deitrick and Cloy Mattox.
He is mentioned in the October 1974 Baseball Digest article called Baseball's Most Incredible Rally, about a game on June 15, 1925.
Interestingly, a generation later a minor league pitcher named Walt Yowell went 50-34. Perhaps he is a relative.
