Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Caleb Ferguson started pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018. After having strong minor league records in 2016, 2017 and early 2018, he came up to the majors in June of that year, to a team (the Dodgers) that was playing .500 ball at the time but would go on to reach the 2018 World Series. Ferguson made his major league debut on June 6, 2018, making a one-off start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With his parents in the stands at PNC Park, it was not a storybook outing, as he started off by hitting Josh Harrison with a pitch, on his way to issuing 3 walks and plunking 2 batters in just 1 2/3 innings, while also allowing 2 hits, resulting in 4 runs. The Dodgers managed to come back before losing the game, 11-8, but he was not involved in the decision. He appeared in 29 games in the regular season, and several in the post-season, but did not appear in the World Series which the Dodgers lost to the Boston Red Sox.

Ferguson was drafted by the Dodgers in the 38th round in the 2014 amateur draft. He had just undergone Tommy John surgery and most teams shied away from him, in spite of his having been a good prospect before the injury.

After going 7-2, 3.49 with 2 saves in 29 games as a rookie, Ferguson made the team in 2019, but struggled in the early going. He was sent down to the minors after 17 major league appearances with his ERA at 5.40. He ended up at 1-2, 4.84 in 46 games and did not appear in the postseason.

Caleb was having a good season in 2020 when he suffered a left ulnar collateral ligament tear, which required Tommy John surgery. he was 2-1, 2.89 in 21 games at the time of the injury and as a result missed the Dodgers' run to a World Series title. He was out all of the 2021 season, returning in 2022 to go 1-0, 1.82 in 37 games. In 2023, he was 7-4, 3.43, with 3 saves - his first since his rookie season - in 68 outings. His 60 1/3 innings were by far the most he had pitched in any major league season, as were his 70 strikeouts. He returned to the postseason for the first time since 2018, pitching 2 1/3 hitless and scoreless innings in L.A.'s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Dividion Series.

On February 5, 2024, he was traded to the New York Yankees in return for Matt Gage and Christian Zazueta; the Dodgers used his vacated spot on the 40-man roster to sign Ryan Brasier.
