Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Matt Gage played in the independent Constellation Energy League when the affiliated minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. He was a free agent at the time, having last pitched for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the Mexican League in 2019.
He was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the 2014 amateur draft, out of Siena College and pitched in the Giants organization until 2018, reaching AAA. He was released in July of that year and finished the year pitching in the New York Mets organization, after one game with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League, before moving to Mexico in 2019. He went 10-4, 5.57 as a starter in his single season in La Liga.
He had a 3.07 ERA in 11 games for the Eastern Reyes del Tigre in the Constellation Energy League, and also pitched well in the Mexican Pacific League the following winter, parlaying this into a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He split the 2021 season between AA and AAA, putting up an ERA of 4.14 in 43 games while going 4-1 with 3 saves. He moved to the Toronto Blue Jays as a free agent before the 2022 season, starting the year with the AAA Buffalo Bisons. He had a stellar ERA of 1.06 in his first 16 games, recording 7 saves, prompting the Blue Jays to call him up on June 6th. He was already 29 at the time, and made his big league debut that same day, pitching a scoreless 9th inning to close out an 8-0 win over the Kansas City Royals, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
He is the first major leaguer to be born in Johnstown, NY, which is near Cooperstown, NY; growing up, he would regularly attend the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony there.
