Biographical Information

Bryan Abreu was one of four pitchers for the Houston Astros to combine on pitching a no-hitter in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on November 2, 2022. He took over for starter Cristian Javier in the 7th inning, after Javier had needed 97 pitches to get through six innings of hitless ball. He was brilliant, striking out the heart of the Phillies' batting order - J.T. Realmuto, Bryan Harper and Nick Castellanos - in order before passing the baton to Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly who completed the feat with one inning each. It was only the second no-hitter in World Series play, following Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, and the third in postseason history. Houston won the game, 5-0. the no-hitter capped a breakout season for the hard-throwing reliever, as he went 4-01, 1.94 in 55 games for Houston that season, with 2 saves and 88 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings.

Abreu was once again one of manager Dusty Baker's most reliable relievers in 2023, going 3-2, 1.75 in 72 games, picking up 5 saves. He gave up his last run of the season on July 15th, but was absolutely spotless after that, finishing with 100 strikeouts in 72 innings. He did give up a run to the Texas Rangers in Game 3 of the ALCS on October 18th, but the Astros still won the game, 8-5. Two days later, in Game 5, he was ejected from the game when the umpires judged that he had deliberately thrown a pitch at Adolis Garcia, who had a home run two innings earlier. Baker argued vehemently against the decision, earning an ejection himself, and the following day Abreu was handed a two-game suspension for throwing at an opposing batter. Ironically, the incident seemed to galvanize the Astros, who came back from a 4-2 deficit in the top the 9th to win the game thanks to a three-run homer by José Altuve. He appealed the suspension and the arbitrator maintained it, bit decreed it would be served at the start of the following season. That allowed him to pitch in both Game 6 and Game 7 of the ALCS.
