Biographical Information[edit]

The brother of Bryce Harper, Bryan Harper was picked 819 selections after his younger sibling went first overall in the 2010 amateur draft.

A left-handed power pitcher, Bryan was All-State as a high school junior and senior. As a senior, his brother Bryce was his catcher. The Washington Nationals took him in the 31st round of the 2008 amateur draft, two years before they would draft Bryce. Bryan went on to Cal State Northridge for one season but was 0-4 with a 6.68 ERA and .351 opponent average. He then transferred to the College of Southern Nevada, where he again formed a brother battery with Bryce. He starred, going 10-1 with a 2.18 ERA, .194 opponent average and 88 K in 57 2/3 IP going into the Junior College World Series.

The Chicago Cubs picked Harper in the 26th round of the 2010 amateur draft, but he elected to continue his college career, heading for the University of South Carolina. He was selected for a third time in the 2011 amateur draft, again by the Nationals. This time, he signed and made his pro debut with the GCL Nationals on August 22nd. Strictly a reliever in the pros, he reached Triple A for the first time in 2015. he underwent Tommy John surgery late in 2016. He was very close to the majors at that point, having put up an ERA of 2.18 in 40 games between the AA Harrisburg Senators and AAA Syracuse Chiefs, but the surgery put a temporary stop to his progression, as he not only missed out on a likely September call-up, but also was inactive for all of 2017.
