Biographical Information[edit]

Breland Brown played briefly in the minors then made lots of news with identity theft in 2011.

In February 2008, Brown signed to play with the Bundesliga's Solingen Alligators, but the contract was voided about a week later due to what the club called unreasonable demands. Brown split 2009 between the Evansville Otters (1 for 7) and American Defenders of New Hampshire (5 for 30, 2 BB, 15 K). He did not play in 2010, then signed as a minor league free agent with the New York Yankees on October 5, 2010. He was released by them and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Breland was only 6 for 35 with 2 doubles, 1 steal (in 3 tries), 5 walks and 13 strikeouts for the 2011 Missoula Osprey. He had one error in six outfield chances.

That fall, he presented himself as the agent of Xavier Paul, getting contracts for himself with the Sydney Blue Sox and Paul with the Brisbane Bandits. When Paul, who did not know of the scheme (and who had grown up near Brown), never showed up in Australia, Brown's plan unraveled. Brown was removed from Sydney's roster in one of the first identity theft scandals in baseball.
