Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Brad Coon played in AAA in 2008-2009, giving him a chance to become the first major leaguer out of Trevecca Nazarene University.
After being a NAIA All-American outfielder at Trevecca Nazarene, Coon was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the 15th round of the 2005 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer with the Orem Owlz, hitting .300/.381/.359 with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 18 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases in 26 tries over 61 games.
The next season, he was with the Cedar Rapids Kernels and hit .278/.382/.352 with 18 doubles, 8 triples, and 29 RBI while leading the Midwest League with 55 steals as well as 21 times caught stealing. He was 4th in the MWL with 79 runs and tied for third in triples. He led all Angels farmhands in swipes and tied Ben Copeland for 4th in the minors in times caught stealing.
He split 2007 between the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (.258/.311/.341) and the Arkansas Travelers (.301/.372/.385), stealing 56 bases between the two clubs. He was thrown out running 21 times. He managed to lead both Rancho Cucamonga and Arkansas in steals as well as pacing all Angels farmhands in that area. He again did not finish in the minors' top 5 in steals though he was in the top 5 in times caught stealing again, tying Quentin Davis and Ovandy Suero for second, one behind Diory Hernandez. He again paced Angels minor leaguers in stolen bases. He hit .260 for the Estrellas de Oriente in the '08 Dominican League.
He was with the AAA Salt Lake Bees for the majority of 2008 and hit .306/.406/.380 while scoring 73 runs in 85 games for the team; he stole a team-high 17 bases but was gunned down 10 times. He remained with the Bees in 2009 and hit .276/.369/.351 with 78 runs scored and 23 steals in 31 tries over the course of the year.
