Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Bobby Basham played in the minor leagues from 2001 to 2007, missing the entire 2004 season and peaking at AA. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 7th round of the 2001 amateur draft, out of the University of Richmond.
He played in the Reds system from 2001, when he started his pro career with the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League, until 2005. He went 1-2, 4.85 in 6 starts his first season, but had a good - albeit short - year with the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League in 2002, finishing at 6-4, 1.54 in 13 games, all as a starter. He also posted a tremendous K/W ratio of 97/9 in 87 2/3 innings. In 2003, he fell to 5-11, 5.01 in 18 games - 17 with the AA Chattanooga Lookouts and 1 with the Potomac Cannons of the Carolina League. After missing 2004, presumably because of an injury, he split 2005 evenly between Class A and AA, starting off with the Sarasota Reds of the Florida State League and Chattanooga in the Southern League. He made exactly 10 starts with each team and ended up at 10-5, 3.36 in an excellent bounce-back season.
On March 21, 2006 he was traded to the San Diego Padres in return for major league catcher David Ross. However, he couldn't reproduce his success with his new team. Spending the 2006 season with the Mobile Bay Bears in the Southern League, he went 0-1, 5.00 in 2 games, as health issues once again got the best of him. In 2007, he made one rehabilitation start with the AZL Padres but was bombed in 7 relief outings with the San Antonio Missions, the Padres' new AA affiliate in the Texas League. He allowed 17 runs in 8 2/3 innings to post an ERA of 16.72 and called it a career.
