Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Vetter may be best known as the long time CCCAA Hall of Fame coach at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA. Prior to joining Palomar in 1981 and eventually being named head coach in 1982, Vetter was the youngest head coach in the nation at United States International University in San Diego, CA.
Vetter played at U.S. International when it won the 1973 NAIA College World Series as the starting center-fielder. Vetter would return as the head coach of USIU in 1978. As the head coach at USIU, Vetter successfully led the 1978 Gulls transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division-I level. In 1980, the Gulls beat the San Diego State team featuring Tony Gwynn and also beat the eventual College World Series champion Arizona Wildcats. The Gulls were ineligible for the playoffs however, due to transition year for moving divisions.
After joining Palomar, Vetter would go on to lead the Comets for 24 years, boasting a 542-393 all-time record and winning 8 conference championships. His best finish at Palomar was a second place at the 2005 CCCAA Baseball Championship.
