California Community College Athletic Association

The California Community College Athletic Association is an integral part of California’s extensive community college system. As authorized by the State Legislature, the Education Code provides the CCCAA the opportunity and authority to establish the rules and regulations to administer the athletic activities of the nearly 25,000 men and women student athletes in the state.
The Community Colleges in the state of California have historically not competed in the NJCAA Baseball World Series but have held their own championships. Through 1977 the championship was a best-of-three series between the Northern champion and the Southern champion, who had each won a (typically) four-team tournament to reach the finals. In 1978 the playoffs were replaced by a double elimination tournament involving all eight (or nine) conference champions. In 1985 the playoffs were reintroduced, with four teams from each region qualifying for the tournament. In 1988 the tournament was reduced to four teams, two from each region.
In 1972 the CCCAA created the Small College Championship, sometimes called Division II. This was for colleges who had smaller enrollments and athletic budgets. The conferences which took part in this competition were the Golden Valley, Coast, Central and Desert. Both the Central and Desert conferences folded, the Central in 1980 and the Desert in 1982. They were replaced by the Bay Valley Conference in the tournament. After the 1984 season the Small College designation was scrapped.
