Biographical Information[edit]

Bob Slater was a second baseman in the California Angels organization from 1976 to 1979. He was selected in the 8th round of the 1976 amateur draft out of Cal State-Northridge and began his pro career that same year with the Idaho Falls Angels of the Pioneer League. After 38 games, during which he hit .291, he was promoted to the Quad Cities Angels of the Midwest League. there, he hit .297 in 25 games and before the year was out, he got to play 3 games for the El Paso Diablos of the Texas League. Between the three stops, he hit .297 in 66 games, with 57 runs scored and 22 RBIs, drawing 49 walks and stealing 24 bases for an excellent first season.

El Paso was his home for the next two season, in 1977 and 1978. The first year, he hit .300/.397/.411 in 114 games and in 1978, he repeated the level by putting up a batting line of .290/.387/.422 in 126 games. He scored 107 runs the first year and 98 the second. stole 30 and 20 bases, hit 22 and 33 doubles, and drove in 69 and 43 runs. He was now considered one of the top prospects in the Angels system, and in fact, Topps put him on a baseball card in its 1979 set, alongside SS Jim Anderson and P Dave Frost, in anticipation that he would soon be making his big league debut. However, 1979 was his last season. He played on 58 games for the Salt Lake City Gulls of the AAA Pacific Coast League, where he hit .265/.364/.361. An injury cut his season short, and another injury during spring training in 1980 ended his pro career.

After baseball, he settled in Yorba Linda, CA, where he set up a painting business while devoting his spare time coaching amateur youth baseball at all levels from little league to college.
