Benjamin Franklin Huffman

Biographical Information[edit]

Ben Huffman is the only major league player to have come from Bridgewater College, where he attended in 1936. His one year in the majors was as a backup catcher in 1937, with the St. Louis Browns who were managed by two Hall of Famers, Rogers Hornsby and Jim Bottomley. The regular catcher that year was Rollie Hemsley. Ben hit quite a bit better than Hemsley that year.

After his playing career ended, Bennie managed in the St. Louis Browns chain for two years with the Gloversville-Johnstown Glovers in 1946 and the Springfield Browns in 1947. He then moved to the Chicago White Sox, where he managed for three years, and was a longtime scout for the White Sox. Huffman managed the Muskegon Clippers in 1948, the Waterloo White Hawks for part of 1949, and the Superior Blues for part of 1950. He also managed the 1960 Charleston White Sox for part of the season. He was responsible for signing Minnie Minoso and Harold Baines for the White Sox.
