After being absent from the California League for the first time since 1940, Bakersfield, CA returned in 1978, three years after the Bakersfield Dodgers had played. The new team was the Bakersfield Outlaws. In '78, the Outlaws were the worst team in the Cal, going 48-92 as an independent managed by George Culver. They drew 36,503 fans, 6th in the 8-team league and were outscored 1,098-770. While the California League was a high-octane loop that year, the Outlaws' 7.84 runs allowed per game were still .74 worse than the next team, the Reno Silver Sox. 1B Gene Krug (.318/~.376/.510, 32 2B, 15 HR) was sixth in the league with 105 RBI while OF Jared Martin (.325/~.414/.374, 43 SB, 99 R) was seventh in average. The team had no All-Stars and John Moncier (4-16, 3.81) led the league in losses despite having an ERA almost two and a half points below the team average.

In 1979 the team remained independent and went 63-77; they were last in the southern division, but vastly improved and 16 games ahead of the last-place Santa Clara Padres. Their attendance of 44,546 was 7th of 10 teams. The new manager was Ron Mihal and they even had an All-Star, SS Onix Concepcion. Concepcion hit .300/~.381/.444 with 88 runs, 14 homers and 17 steals, though he made 55 errors. The Outlaws were outtallied 903-788 and they were only second-worst in runs allowed this time, as Santa Clara surrendered 81 more. The club did not return in 1980.
