Biographical Information[edit]

Austin Hyatt pitched in the Philadelphia Phillies system from 2009 to 2012. The strikeout ace was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 23rd round of the 2004 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by Philadelphia in the 15th round of the 2009 amateur draft, a couple picks after pitcher Shane Greene and a couple of picks ahead of pitcher Pierce Johnson. He was signed by scout Mike Stauffer.

In 17 games (5 starts) with the Williamsport Crosscutters in 2009, he went 3-0 with a 0.66 ERA; in 54 1/3 innings, he allowed 26 hits and 12 walks (0.699 WHIP) and struck out 81 batters. He also started a game with the Lakewood BlueClaws and though he lasted just 4 2/3 innings, posting a 7.71 ERA, he added 8 more strikeouts. Overall, he was 3-0 with a 1.22 ERA in 18 games (6 starts), striking out 89 batters in 59 frames. In his first full season, 2010, he went 12-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 27 games (25 starts) between the Clearwater Threshers (11-5, 3.04 ERA) and Reading Phillies (1-0, 4.91 ERA). In 146 1/3 innings, he allowed 121 hits and 44 walks, while striking out 181 batters. He was a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star, an FSL Post-Season All-Star and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star. Most notably, he won the FSL Most Valuable Pitcher award.

Going into 2011, Baseball America ranked him the 24th-best prospect in the Phillies system. Back with Reading, he went 12-6 with a 3.85 ERA in 28 starts that year. In 154 1/3 innings, he allowed 136 hits and 49 walks, while striking out 171 batters. He led the Eastern League in wins and was a Mid-Season All-Star. BA ranked him the #22 prospect in the organization heading into 2012. He reached Triple A for the first and only time that year, going 2-7 with a 6.33 ERA in 11 starts for the LeHigh Valley IronPigs; he also went 8-5, 4.62 in 16 starts for Reading, giving him a 10-12, 5.27 line in 27 starts. In 141 2/3 innings, his struck out only 110 batters.

Overall, Hyatt went 37-23 with a 3.79 ERA in 100 games (86 starts). In 501 1/3 innings, he allowed 442 hits and 159 walks (1.199 WHIP), while striking out 551 batters.
