Biographical Information[edit]

Angel D'Meza was a pitcher in the Cuban Winter League from 1897 to 1907.

He debuted with Feista in the 1897-1899 CWL. [1] He went 0-5 with a 5.40 ERA (46 ERA+) for Almendarista in 1900. [2] He improved to 1-10, 3.48 (54 ERA+) and hit .204/.291/.204 (64 OPS+) for Cubano in 1901. [3] He was 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA (41 ERA+) for Almendares in 1902-1903. [4]

D'Meza was 1-1 against the Cuban X-Giants when they visited Cuba in the winter of 1903. [5] He seemed to make strides in the 1903-04 season, as he is credited for 4 of San Francisco's 9 wins that year. He had a 4-5, 3.38 ERA for a 90 ERA+. Only Carlos Royer had a better K:BB ratio in the CWL. He tied Juan Violá for second in wins (7 behind Boyer), was 3rd with 8 CG and 3rd with 30 K (behind Royer and Violá). [6] When a Tampa minor league team visited Cuba in the fall, he lost to Charlie Hickman. [7] He also dropped two games to the "All-Americans", losing to Jack Doscher and Frank Barberich. [8]

The right-hander was the workhorse of the Almendares team that won the 1904-1905 CWL at 9-5, 1.65 (105 ERA+). He was second to José Muñoz in wins, starts, complete games and innings, led in K (14 ahead of Muñoz) and was 4th in ERA. [9] When American teams visited the island, he lost to Rube Foster and the X-Giants and was 1-1 against Jerry Nops and the Lynn, MA team. [10]

Angel was 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA for the All-Cubans when they toured the US in 1905 and faced top black teams. [11] He fell to 2-4, 2.94 (51 ERA+) as Almendares' #3 starter in 1905-1906, behind Muñoz and Inocencio Pérez. [12] In the winter, he lost to Bill Gatewood and the X-Giants and beat the All-Americans team. [13] He was 0-1 with a 3.50 ERA for the All-Cubans in their 1906 US debut [14] and followed with a 0-2, 11.68 winter ball. [15]

The veteran had a 2-2, 3.03 record in the Cuban Summer League in 1907. [16] He lost to the Philadelphia Giants when they visited Cuba and dropped decisions to the All-Leaguers' Bill Mack and Cotton Minahan. [17]
