Biographical Information

Cotton Minahan had an excellent 1.29 ERA in his only season in the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds in 1907. Unfortunately, he gave up 6 unearned runs in addition to the 2 earned runs and walked 13 in 14 innings. He played for the Toledo Mud Hens in 1905 and 1906.

He attended both Georgetown University and Manhattan College at various times from 1900 to 1906. He competed in the 1900 Olympics as a sprinter - making him one of the few major-leaguers to compete in the Olympics prior to 1992, when baseball became a medal sport.

The Reds in 1907 had a team ERA of 2.41, and only two pitchers that year had ERA's over 3.00. Two pitchers had ERA's lower than Minahan: Bob Spade, with a 1.00 ERA in 27 innings, and Frank Leary, with a 1.12 ERA in 8 innings. The Chicago Cubs led the National League with a 1.73 team ERA.

He is described as a heavy smoker, which may explain why his athletic career was short-lived.
