Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Andre David of the Minnesota Twins hit a home run off Jack Morris in his first big league at bat, but never hit another one in the majors.

After retiring in 1989, David joined the New York Mets organization. He began as a minor league hitting instructor for the Mets in 1990. The Mets liked what they saw and promoted him to manager of the Kingsport Mets for the 1991-1992 seasons. He returned to a roving instructor role in 1993 before serving as the St. Lucie Mets hitting coach in 1994.

After three years away from the professional coaching ranks, David joined the Kansas City Royals in 1998 and has worked in their player development system since then. He served as the GCL Royals manager in 1998-1999. He started the 2000 season as a minor league hitting instructor before returning to the GCL Royals on August 1st to replace Ron Karkovice as manager. David resumed his roving hitting instructor role in 2001 and stayed there until May 30, 2005 when the Royals fired hitting coach Jeff Pentland and replaced him with David. Unfortunately for David and the Royals, the hitters did not show improvement and David was fired less than a year later to be replaced by Mike Barnett on May 1, 2006. David took over Barnett's job as a minor league hitting instructor for the remainder of the season.

From 2007-2009 David worked as the Royals' minor league hitting coordinator. David spent the next three years (2010-2012) as a hitting coach for the AZL Royals. He ascended to the major leagues once again in 2013 when he was named the Royals' assistant hitting coach. That did not last long, however, as the team failed to hit. On May 30th management decided to make a change, re-assigning hitting coach Jack Maloof and David to the minor leagues while team legend George Brett took over as hitting coach and Pedro Grifol was promoted from the minor league staff to serve as his assistant. David was then a coach for the AZL Royals for the remainder of the season.

David served as a hitting coach for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2014, Idaho Falls Chukars in 2015-2016, Burlington Royals in 2017, and AZL Royals in 2018. He returned to a roving hitting instructor role for the 2019 season. In 2020 he was slated to be the AZL Royals hitting coach before the minor league season was cancelled do to COVID-19. David returned to managing in 2021 with the ACL Royals Gold. He was then bench coach of the ACL Royals in 2022 and hitting coach of the same team in 2023.

In addition to his Mets and Royals responsibilities, David served as a manager for the 2009 Surprise Rafters in the Arizona Fall League. During the 2011/2012 off season he traveled south to Venezuela to work as the hitting coach for the 2011/2012 Navegantes del Magallanes of the Venezuelan League.
