Biographical Information[edit]
Andrés Julio Báez (listed as Julio in his brief US career, but known in the Dominican by his first and middle names together or his nickname Grillo B) was an early Dominican major leaguer. His brothers Luis Báez and Pedro Báez were his teammates on the Dominican national team. He played in Cuba, Panama, Venezuela, Curaçao, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the United States.
In Venezuela in 1938, he won a 1-0, 20-inning duel against former major leaguer Lázaro Salazar. He was briefly with the New York Cubans in 1940. He was 3-0 with a 0.59 ERA in the 1942 Amateur World Series (he was not alone in playing in an Amateur World Series as a former pro - the 1940 edition had Herbert North, Lou Athanas and Johnny Kerr among others, for instance. The trend continued throughout the decade, such as Bobby Ávila with Mexico in 1944). He led the Series in ERA, .09 ahead of Venezuela's J.F. Hernandez (Juan Hernández presumably). He was tied for second in wins, one behind teammate Luis Castro. The Dominicans won Silver.
He was 0-1 with a 1.61 ERA in the 1943 Amateur World Series, finishing 7th in ERA (between future big leaguer Rogelio Martínez and M. Acuña. He was briefly with the 1946 Alijadores de Tampico in Mexico.
