Biographical Information[edit]
Juan Hernández pitched for the Venezuelan national team and in the minors.
He was with Venezuela for the 1940 Amateur World Series. He was part of the Venezuelan squad that won the 1941 Amateur World Series; they became known as the Héroes del 41 and were later enshrined as a unit into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame. He attended spring training with the Washington Senators in 1944, when they were recruiting many Cuban and Venezuelan players due to many US players serving the country during World War II. He did not make the Senators, spending the summer with their Williamsport Grays farm club. He had a 5-8, 3.58 record.
When the Venezuelan League formed in 1946, Gatico was 0-2 with a 9.37 ERA for the Navegantes del Magallanes, walking 18 in 16 1/3 IP. He moved to the Patriotas de Venezuela in 1946-1947 and had a 2-5, 4.99 mark. He tied for second in losses, one behind Sam Nahem. He was 2-3 with a 7.13 ERA for the 1947-1948 Patriots and 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 1948-1949. He had gone 5-11 with a 6.32 ERA in 41 LVBP games.
