Biographical Information

Rogelio Martinez was a famous amateur and later professional player in Cuba who was signed by the Washington Senators in 1947 and came to the majors with them for two games in 1950. Connie Marrero, another famous Cuban player, also made his major league debut with the Senators that year. Both were past the age of 30 at the time.

He was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA for the Cuban national team in the 1941 Amateur World Series. Rogelio went 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA in the 1943 Amateur World Series, tying teammate Julio Moreno for the most wins. In the 1944 Amateur World Series, he was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA. On February 6, 1950, he hurled the seventh no-hitter in Cuban baseball history as Marianao defeated Almendares 3 to 0.

He moved to the U.S. in 1962 and lived for many years in New York and Connecticut. Martinez died at his home in Connecticut on May 24, 2010.
