Biographical Information

Julio Moreno was 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA for the Cuban national team in the 1941 Amateur World Series. In the 1942 Amateur World Series, he was 3-0 with a 1.36 ERA and tied Izzy Leon for the most wins to help Cuba win the Gold. "Jiquí" - nicknamed for a Cuban hardwood tree - was 3-1 with a 0.70 ERA in the 1943 Amateur World Series, leading all hurlers in victories (tied with teammate Rogelio Martinez) as Cuba again won Gold. Moreno was 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA for Cuba in the 1944 Amateur World Series.

Moreno went 19-4 with a 2.13 ERA for the Havana Cubans in 1947 and played for the Washington Senators from 1950 to 1953. He went on to later play eleven years in the Mexican League. Moreno was a manager in Mexico and also in the Nicaraguan winter league.

After his playing days ended in the winter of 1966-67, Jiquí pitched batting practice for the 1968 champion Detroit Tigers, spending the next season with them as well. He spent many years coaching Cuban-American youngsters in Miami, FL.
