Biographical Information[edit]

Alex Smith was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 25th round of the 1985 amateur draft but did not sign. He was then taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 16th round of the 1986 amateur draft and made his pro debut that year. On August 7, 1986, playing for the Sumter Braves, he went 7-for-7 in a game against the Columbia Mets. Overall, he played four years in the Braves organization, reaching the AAA level with the Richmond Braves in his final two seasons. After several summers away from pro ball, he appeared in 3 games with the Florence Flame of the independent Atlantic Coast League in 1995 (going 6-for-13).

Since his playing days, Smith has been a scout for the Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals, most notable for signing Ryan Zimmerman.
