Biographical Information[edit]

Al Ogletree was a highly successful college coach after playing two years in the minor leagues.

He debuted in 1952 with the Crowley Millers, hitting .241/~.346/.375 in 45 games. He missed the next two seasons, due to military service in the Army. Returning in 1955, he batted .255 with 12 HR and 64 RBI for Crowley. He tied for 9th in the Evangeline League in home runs.

Ogletree began his coaching career as the head coach at the University of Dallas from 1958 to 1965. After Ogletree led Sul Ross State College to the NAIA World Series in 1968, the baseball program was dropped. Ogletree had a 50-46 record at Sul Ross from 1966-1968. He then was the head coach at the University of Texas, Pan American from 1969 to 1997. In 1989 he became the 4th D-I college coach with 1,000 victories, following Rod Dedeaux, Ron Fraser, and Cliff Gustafson. At Pan-American, Ogletree was 1,117-630-1 in 30 years, leading the school to the 1971 College World Series, where they finished third.
