2019 African Championship Qualifiers
The 2019 African Championship Qualifiers were the regional qualifiers for the 2019 African Championship. Originally, 17 teams were announced in four different zones vying for four slots but that was shrunk to 8 teams in three zones, with six spots available.
West Zone[edit]
- In Accra, Ghana
- March 22: Burkina Faso 13, Nigeria 3. Burkina Faso, which had not played in Africa's prior 3 championships, started with a bang. 2B Lassina Sanfo hit a two-run homer and CF Sanou doubled twice while Amed Bonkdoungou got the win in relief.
- March 23: Burkina Faso 14, Ghana 4. Burkina Faso became the first team to qualify by also routing the host. RF Amed Bonkdoungou and LF Zabre both homered, while Kafando got the win in relief.
- March 24: Nigeria 7, Ghana 6. The hosts put up a fight, but get edged by Nigeria for the 2nd spot in the Championship. In the bottom of the 7th, Nigeria scored the winning run against Boafo; SS David Yonusa reached one error and scored on another. LF Saka also homered, while Peter Yonusa got a complete game win.
East Zone[edit]
- In Nairobi, Kenya
- April 5: Kenya 14, Tanzania 12. In a wild game featuring 13 errors, the hosts eked out a win. LF Katumo scored four runs.
- April 6: Uganda 23, Tanzania 1. Uganda roughed up 16-year-old Ibrahim Kombo for 9 runs in the first. Bernard Adei got the win with three perfect innings while Uganda got homers from SS Paul Wafula, LF Joseph Droti (2), DH Isaac Odongo, CF Robert Okello, C Dennis Achidri, 1B Tony Keefa and 3B Daniel Alio in a mercy rule rout.
- April 7: Uganda 12, Kenya 0. With both teams having already locked up spots in the next round, Uganda routs the hosts.
South Zone[edit]
- In Johannesburg, South Africa
- April 29: South Africa 19, Zimbabwe 0. Due to a late withdrawal by Lesotho, both South Africa and Zimbabwe had locked up spots in the Championship and would play for seeding purposes only. The hosts crushed Zimbabwe for the #1 seed.
