The 1998 Hoofdklasse season was called the Start Baseball League for sponsorship reasons. Mr. Cocker HCAW won only their second Hoofdklasse title by beating Tropicana Neptunus in the Holland Series.

Two Rotterdam clubs, Sparta and Feyenoord, merged to create a new team, Sparta/Feyenoord. They finished in 7th place and out of the playoffs. PSV had a dismal year, going 1-44 and 33 games back.

Amsterdam Expos 3B Elston Hansen won the Triple Crown and was named Hoofdklasse MVP.
