1990 World Junior Championship
(Redirected from 1990 Junior World Championship)
The 1990 World Junior Championship was the tenth World Junior Championship and the first hosted by a non-English-language country, Cuba. Cuba was criticized by US coach Bernie Walter for scheduling Cuba's games in the cooler evenings and the USA's in the hotter daytime, though host countries in international tournaments often play the last game, which tends to draw the best crowds. Walter also claimed Cuba's TV man was signalling pitches for the team. They beat the US 7-1 in the finale.
Cuba went 10-0 to win their 5th Gold. The team included Eduardo Paret.
Taiwan won the Silver despite a 5-4 record, going 3-2 in the second round. Ping-Nan Chen, Chun-Chang Yeh and Chun-Liang Wu played for them. Wen-Sheng Hsiao was their manager.
The USA finished third at 7-2. Their team was led by P Jose Prado (a tourney-high 29 K), All-Tournament RF Shawn Green (.486, a tournament-best 17 hits), All-Tournament 1B Jay Powell (the leader with 4 HR and 19 RBI), All-Tournament C Willie Morales (.316) and All-Tournament 2B Paul Petrulis (.432).
Venezuela (5-5) was 4th, joined by Canada (4-5) and Mexico (5-5) as the other teams to make the final round. Teams that did not make the final round were Australia (2-3), Italy (1-3), Brazil (1-4), France (0-4) and the Netherlands (0-5).
