1965 Amateur World Series

The 1965 Amateur World Series was held in Cartagena, Colombia from February 12 through February 27, 1965. It was the 16th Amateur World Series. The Cuban national team was denied a chance to defend its title as Colombia, then run by a right-wing regime, refused to grant visas to Cuba's players.

Colombia took advantage of the Cuban absence to win their second (and last) Amateur World Series. They went 9-2, going 7-1 in the first round and then topping Mexico in 2 of 3 during the finals. Luis de Arcos led the tournament with 12 runs.

Mexico got Silver. They were 7-1 in the first round before falling to Colombia in the finals. Jose Parcero led the event with 4 doubles while David Garcia tied for the win lead, with 3. On February 14, Garcia threw the second no-hitter in AWS history (the first was in 1947) - a perfect game against Guatemala.

Puerto Rico won Bronze with a 5-3 record. Andres Cruz led the Series in average (.485), hits (16) and RBI (8). Efrain Contreras set an Amateur World Series record by striking out 19 against the Netherlands Antilles.

Panama, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua tied for 4th at 4-4. Panama's Urbano Camarena led in steals (5) while Nicaragua's Arturo Hudson led in ERA (0.00) and tied for the most wins (3).
