On June 25th, the 1903 Washington Senators were shut out by Earl Moore of the Cleveland Naps, 4-0. OF Ed Delahanty collected one of his team's four hits that day, extending a personal hitting streak to 16 games. It was the first game of a ten-game series during which the Senators would be shut out seven times and fall a full ten games behind the next worst team in the American League, the New York Highlanders. Delahanty sat out the rest of these games due to what was described as a "very bad headache", and he then went missing as the team returned home from Detroit. Newspapers were filled with accounts of his bizarre behavior during the road trip, including expressing suicidal thoughts. Indeed, his body was found a few days later as he had apparently fallen (or jumped) from the international bridge over the Niagara River and had eventually washed over Niagara Falls before being recovered.
