Biographical Information[edit]
Zack Wiley played for the Great Britain national team for a few years, as did his brother Sam Wiley. Their mother is English and their father is American; the boys grew up in the US.
Zack hit .279/.376/.360 for Le Moyne College in 2013. He joined the British squad for the 2013 B-Level European Championship, hitting .353/.420/.412 with 8 runs in 5 games in the round-robin phase, fielding .889 as their starting shortstop. He scored four runs against Switzerland. He led in runs (one ahead of teammates Matt Roxburgh and Mitch Evans), tied Maikel Azcuy for the most walks (6) and was 4th in OBP (behind Ian Young, Azcuy and Ruslan Deykun). In the finale against Ukraine, he was 0 for 4 from the leadoff slot against Kostyantyn Korolov and Dmytro Limarenko but Britain prevailed to win a spot in the 2014 European Championship. [1]
In the 2014 European Championship, he hit .313/.500/.500 with four runs in five games in the first round, fielding .938. He tied Evans for the team lead in OBP and slugging. A highlight was a 3-run dinger off Sweden's Arvid Carlstedt; Evans was their only other player to homer in the opening round. In the consolation pool, he was 2 for 6 with a .600 OBP, double, triple, four runs and two RBI while making one error in eight chances as Britain did well enough to avoid a trip back to the B-Pool. [2]
Wiley scored three runs in Britain's win over Greece in the 2016 European Championship. He hit .192/.300/.192 for the event, the lowest OPS by a British regular, but played error-free defense and scored a team-high 7 runs in 7 games. He tied for 10th in the Euros in runs. [3]
