Biographical Information[edit]

Zach Cates is a pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Cates had a 7-2, 2.54 record with 91 whiffs in 67 1/3 IP as a sophomore in 2010 (he was mostly a catcher as a freshman). His fastball hit 97 mph at its peak on the radar gun. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd round of the 2010 amateur draft out of junior college and signed for $765,000, about double the slot value. The scout was Jeff Curtis. Pitching for the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League in 2011, the right-hander was 4-10, 4.73 in 25 starts, striking out 111 batters in 118 innings. On January 6, 2012, he was traded to the Cubs along with 1B Anthony Rizzo in return for P Andrew Cashner and OF Kyung-Min Na. The Cubs were not proceeding blindly: Jed Hoyer, who had drafted and signed Zach as General manager of the Padres, was now in the same position with the Cubs.
